Slam Dunk Project, VARIOUS CITIES IN THE GTA

OAKVILLE, MISSISSAUGA, BURLINGTON, TORONTO, ONTARIO

Visual Artist Mallory Tolcher working with Elementary, Secondary, and College Programs, as well as participating individuals across the GTA and beyond.

The Slam Dunk Project follows Mallory Tolcher’s journey as she trained to slam dunk a basketball on a 10' rim. Her original goal pivoted after realizing within the first couple months of training that her gender and race became the go-to topics of discussion. Exploring these themes, she toured to many Elementary and Secondary schools to share her experiences of training and discuss the deep-rooted issues of racism and sexism within sports and athletics. Challenging discussions through an anti-racist and anti-sexist lens empowered students to create artworks of their own, leading Tolcher to collecting over 500 handmade signs of support from students of all ages. As she continued her goal to slam dunk, she would ask a variety of audiences - family, friends, artists, basketball teams and complete strangers - to create signs of support as a way to keep her motivated. The collection is meant to inspire anyone to achieve their dreams.
